Tip of the Day: Olive Oil

One of the best cures for dry skin is extra virgin olive oil.  EVOO contains antioxidant vitamin E and vitamin A.  

Put a few teaspoons in your next bath or buy soap that already has some in it.  For a really dry patch, rub the EVOO directly on the area.  It's great for hair, scalp and cuticles, too! 

Jamberry Nail Shields

Avon's SuperCurlacious Mascara - A Review

Today is my first product review blog entry.  I hope to do one a week.  

Today I'm offering a review of Avon's SuperCurlacious Mascara.  

Let me first tell you, I'm not a make-up kind of girl; I often don't wear any.  When I do wear it, it's usually reserved to my eyes (eyebrow pencil, eyeliner, maybe some eyeshadow and mascara).  My oily skin doesn't like foundation and I don't care for blush either.  At 34, I still have regular acne and I don't need to put anything on my face that's going to clog up my huge pores (I know--TMI).  Most days that I opt in, I just stick with the eyebrow pencil and mascara.  So, mascara's important to me.

I have fairly long eyelashes, though they've thinned as I've gotten older.  They are also mostly straight (except for a few crazy, haywire ones on my right eye).  Because they are mostly straight--long or not--you can't see them much.  I've tried eyelash curlers and they don't seem to work for me.  Mascara helps make them more visible, but they still stick out straight, making them barely visible.

One of the first things I ordered when I started selling Avon is the SuperCurlacious Mascara in black.  I have to say, I'm pretty impressed with it.  It does lengthen my lashes even more and it helps them have a nice curl--or at least a nice bend.  That's really something for me.

Money Saving Beauty Tip: Homemade Sugar Scrub

Today’s money saving beauty tip is homemade sugar scrubs. I found these this fall on Pinterest and was so excited to see how simple they are to put together. I plan to keep this in my repertoire for gift basket ideas this year. I love a good sugar scrub but buying them is expensive.

2 Cups of Brown Sugar

1 Cup of Granulated Sugar

2 Tablespoons of Pumpkin Pie Spice (or 2 tsp cinnamon, 2 tsp nutmeg & 2 tsp ginger)

1 Cup + 1 Tablespoon of Sunflower, Safflower, or Vegetable Oil

50% sugar



Here’s more for helping revive tired skin. This one’s based on a recipe from Larry Pleasant, CEO of The Vermont Soapworks:

• 50% oil
• small amounts of aloe vera gel, vitamin C crystals or any other healing ingredient that dissolves in water
• 1 or 2 drops of essential oil, if desired

Sugar scrubs are great for exfoliating (getting rid of the dead skin cells built up on the outer surface of your skin). And because they are mixed with oil, they moisturize the fresh new skin underneath.

With a little research I found some great variations for adding scents, spices, nutrients and antioxidants. The basic recipe is as follows:

½ cup sugar (you can use white or brown)
Enough organic oil to moisten the sugar (not mineral oil, like baby oil, but olive, sunflower, avocado, peanut, etc.)

Now you can get creative depending on your tastes and skin needs. Avoid olive oil if you don’t like the scent or if you plan on using your own scents that could conflict with the strong smell.

Welcome to Outside Inside Beauty!

Welcome and let me take a moment to introduce myself.  My 

name is Heather.  I am in my mid 30s and I've never given much time or attention to a "beauty regimen".  It's not that I don't like beauty, or want to be beautiful, it's just that it seems to me to be a lot of work and expense when there are other things that I place higher up on my priority list for my time and money.

Now that I am in my 30s and I'm beginning to recognize that soon I'm going to be seeing more lines, gray hairs, etc., I'm thinking I should do my best to take some care with myself.  I also know enough to recognize that beauty is not skin deep.  I think that a healthy, radiant woman is a beautiful woman regardless of whether she has features denoting "classic beauty".  Because of that, I know it's just as important to focus on health and well being--for the sake of my body as well as beauty.

I recently started selling Avon, which is something I have very little experience with.  I thought it was a good time to start up this blog to share my journey as I explore time saving and

money saving beauty tips that work, as well as review the various Avon products I try out.  Just because I sell the stuff, doesn't mean I won't be brutally honest about each product I try.

I might be crazy--I have a hard time keeping up with our family blog: Our Hungry House.  But I don't plan on this one being quite as involved.  Just tips here and there as well as reviews of products and plugs for the good one :-).
